Porno Mags

topic posted Tue, February 1, 2005 - 1:17 PM by  Unsubscribed
I was wondering, what magazines out there do you guys think my artwork would be suited to or you'd like to see it appear in?

I did "Chemistry" as an editorial illustration for Freshmen magazine. I've also done stuff for Instigator, pro bono, but I'm looking at making cash so I don't have to eat ramen noodles.

Any bright ideas?

My Comrade would probably be into publishing your work, but I don't know if you'd like them. (Drag queens put it out. HAHA!) Just for your information, Patrick, My Comrade is not new. It has been around for at least 15 years.

I know a lot of people who put out small quarterlies and zines, but no one can pay you. Pretty much everything is "contributed".

I go away for an afternoon to meet with the Gay and Lesbian Center Director and you guys start throwing around the ideas! ;)

Tell me more about this My Comrade... website? who runs it?

Butt Magazine I've had my eye on for the last year. Anyone know anyone there...? I've been told to write to the magazine directly. Maybe I should put up or shut up with that one...

I totally need to get paid for my stuff. The days of 'doing it for the community' isn't going to work for me. I should get something besides a hot lay from magazine editors... because at the end of the day, dick don't pay the rent! ;)

At least, not in my case... yet.

              Look:

Hmm... not so sure I fit in at My Comrade...

Is the Polished Knob still going? I met the guy who did it in SF, like, 10 years ago. I doubt he could afford me as I seem to remember he does it all himself on his Macintosh. He's gotta make a living too :)

I'd like to see you in Flaunt.

Have you thought about getting an agent?

...or do you only want to publish in porn mags? That's completely valid, of course.

Flaunt is cool, but do they publish hard-ons and anal penetration images?

Nope, I obviously didn't pay attention to the word 'porn' in this thread.

Nevertheless, not all of Drub's work features hardons and penetration. My particular fave is the guy on the Vespa in which there's no dick at all. That's the kind of thing that might get work in fields other than porn (if he so desires).

And then there's the concept of expanding horizons...

A long, long time ago I was approached by the art director for Out Magazine before I really knew what I wanted to do with my artwork... I could kick myself for turning down the cash. But at 21, publishing a zine, and being mad at the world can do that to you.

I was featured in Blue Magazine in September with the wrester piece, which has no woodies visible... so parlaying my illustration style into Flaunt, Wallpaper, or other edgier magazines I wouldn't be opposed to...

So besides Flaunt, what other magazines do you guys read that you think you'd like to see me in?

The reason I said porno mags is because that stuff tends to be much more fun for me. It doesn't need to be but it sure helps. :)

I should start paying attention to Blue. If they're willing to publish your work alongside the supergay pin-up photos then maybe they're alright.

Also, FYI, mainstream GAY (as opposed to queer) mags like Freshmen often won't allow hardons or penetration in illustrations.

I had to redraw a penis in one of my illo's for Genre because it was a little too apparent. They felt, despite their pandering photo spreads of overly glossy boys, a hand drawn, imaginary penis might offend their advertisers.

"Chemistry" which I did for Freshmen and they subsequently bought the rights to put it on everything from promo material to reprinting it for up to a year, features a hard-on.

            Their policy was interesting...
Don't touch the penis, no penetration with the penis, no ejaculate, no piss, just nakedness. They provided a challenge for me to work within those guidelines and it's not a bad piece... it's a bit on the 'twinky' side for my tastes but the composition is nice and the colors are vibrant and it gets some of the more vanilla guys to look through my other work and realize there's so much more to sex....

            *insert evil laugh*

In something like Genre, I could see their point about the penis.

I'm going through something like that with the San Diego Gay and Lesbian Center here. I and two other artists met with them yesterday to go over details for a group show and their main concern was offending lesbians who have rejected patriarchal imagery and systems, embarrassing politicians and people who give money, and causing an uproar with my artwork inparticular because it was about sex... which I then reinforced and explained that it was "sex positive" (and humorous at times) work - none of the characters I draw aren't hating what's being done to them... but that's me and my work and what it's about really.

I don't know if they'll take the ball and run with our proposal simply because I'm not a prude and they have to play with the politics of pleasing others.

I saw a self-described 'fetish' mag called >Instigator< this week and, although I was rushed and sans eyewear, it appeared that they use a lot of illustration.

It also appeared they use only one illustrator (!) and, interestingly, his work looks a bit like yours. Again, I was without my glasses.

    Have you seen it?

      have seen it as well.
it's fairly new and I think it's out of LA, but other than that have not much info on it.
They definitely don't have much text -- not a writer's magazine (though hopefully that'll change somewhat as they mature)

didn't think about the artwork, will have to take another gander at it though

That would be Axel, I'm guessing... as he does all the illustrations for the magazine. Our drawing and painting styles are different, but we work in a similar manner.

I know the editor, he's from Lawrence, Kansas, and he's so fucking fun to hang out with. I did so the winter before I fled.

I was in Issue #3... big spreads of my art and a rubber piece just for them. The piece is called "Instigator" (funny enough). The only thing is they aren't as established as say "Unzipped" due to the fact their content isn't fluff, doesn't talk down to the reader, and shoots straight from the hips... I think a lot of advertisers get scared of honesty.

I did it "for the community" as they like to label it there at the magazine, but I don't put pretense on anything like that. I knew they wanted my artwork and I wanted free advertisement. I happened to get a whole lot of it.

I may, in a couple of issues, decide to approach them again to see if they need any holes filled. *grin*

        www.instigatormagazine.com

It actually has a whole lot of writing in it to go with layout that may make a trained type-fetishist's hair catch on fire, but you have to appreciate the honesty, energy, and no-holds(holes?) barred approach to sex and the modern (kinky) fag.

Oh I wasn't meaning that they were other than from the hip, just that I hadn't seen a lot of text (which I'll admin, isn't always what I'm lookin for).

I'll definitely take another gander at it (been a couple of months since I last looked at it).

I tend to go through cycles (reading a lot of X, then move on to somethin else for a while, then back). I've a voracious appetite in reading (as well as other things) and an insomniac to boot, so I tend to read more than I really have time for.
